Ottery St Mary

Situated on the River Otter, in the county of Devon, Ottery St Mary's early prosperity was founded on the wool trade and, later, on lace making. The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, of Ancient Mariner fame, whose father was a local vicar, grew up in the town. There is some excellent trout fishing to be had in the River Otter. The map below shows the features of the town as it was in the mid twentieth century. Select an area to enlarge by clicking on the map.
