Ilfracombe

Ilfracombe, situated about twelve miles north of Barnstaple, with a population of around ten thousand, is the largest seaside resort on the north coast of Devon. Surrounded by cliffs and hills, the town features terraced slopes rising steeply from the shore, with many fine Victorian buildings, including some fine hotels built to cater for the many visitors. Before its rise to prominence as a holiday resort in the nineteenth century, in Tudor and Elizabethan times Ilfracombe was a small fishing and trading port and its attractive harbour still buzzes with the coming and going of small boats. Holiday makers will find much of interest in Ilfracombe, from the many small sandy coves to its public gardens, museum, even a zoo.
