Dunfermline

The city of Dunfermline, population around 40,000, sits on high ground three miles north of the Firth of Forth. This Fife Royal burgh was capital of Scotland for six centuries and King Robert the Bruce lies at rest within the grounds of Dunfermline Abbey. In the past, the town’s industry has included linen, brewing and distilling, iron foundries, milling and rope-making. Major employers in the town today are engineering, electronics, and textiles and, more recently, telephone call centres of major companies. Dunfermline is the birthplace of its major benefactor, Andrew Carnegie. The map below shows the features of the city, its streets and houses as they were in the mid twentieth century.
