Winchester

Winchester is a famous historic city in Hampshire, southern England, with a population of around 40,000. It is the county town and administrative capital of Hampshire. An important town in Roman times, in Anglo-Saxon and Norman times Winchester was the capital of England. Important landmarks include the Great Hall, the only remaining part of Winchester Castle, Winchester Cathedral, Winchester College, the famous public school founded in the fourteenth century, and the Pilgrims' School and Pilgrims' hall. The ancient Pilgrim’s Way begins in Winchester and runs to Canterbury. The map below shows the features of the city, its streets and houses as they were in the mid twentieth century.
