Thornhill
Thornhill is a small Scottish burgh
situated on the middle River Nith in Dumfries and Galloway. The “ducal
village”, so called because of its long association with the Dukes of
Queensbury and Buccleuch, with its wide street plan, dates back to the fourteenth
century. Nearby Drumlanrig Castle,
built by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry,
in the late sixteen hundreds, is now home to the Duke of Buccleuch. The estate
has some good salmon and sea trout fishing on several miles of the River Nith, which is
available to visiting anglers. The area is also popular with visiting
walkers. The map below shows the
