Shaftsbury
Shaftsbury, situated atop the 700 foot high plateau overlooking Blackmoor Vale, is the only hilltop town in Dorset. Thomas Hardy, in his Wessex novels, refers to the town as Shaston, which was its original name. The ruined Abbey dates from AD 981. The town’s museum stands at the top of the cobbled Gold Hill.
