London

London is the capital and by far the largest city in England and the United Kingdom. London has been a major city from Roman times and has since grown to be one of the world's most important cities with a population, in Greater London, in excess of seven million people. London is the historic seat of British Government, a busy international port on the River Thames, and the City of London, home of the London Stock Exchange, is one of the world's most important financial centres. London attracts millions of tourists every year, with many famous and historic visitor attractions in buildings such as the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and Number 10 Downing Street. In addition, there are numerous museums, art galleries and theatres. There are famous shops and street markets and visitors are well catered for with many world famous hotels and restaurants. The map below shows London as it was around the middle of last century. Click on an area of the map to see an enlargement.
